Duke’s office.
Duke: Damn it, Angel do you think its easy walk out on the woman that I love?
Angel: I’m sorry, but I was worried about you.  Do you have a plan?
Duke: (carrying files to the fireplace) Of course I have a plan (fireplace opens
and Duke puts files into it) Tomorrow, the messenger will take these over to
Chief Ramsey.  I’ll make my way to the airport.  By the time he opens up the
package, I’ll be on my way to a very  remote place.
Angel: Yeah, well it better be Mars if you don’t want the mob to find you.
Duke: Well, they won’t find me straight away.  What I’m doing is buying time.
Listen man, I have to distance myself from Anna so that she’s not suffering
from the fallout.  It will take them a couple of months before they find me.
Angel: You mean us-- us.   I’m going with you.
Duke: No, you’re not.
Angel: You’re gonna leave me here to take the heat?
Duke: It’s okay.  The police will understand that you no idea what was going
on.
Angel: What about Damon?  He knows you told me about what’s going on.
Duke: I’ve taken care of that as well, Angel.  As far as Damon’s concerned,
you had no idea what I was doing.
A knock on the door and in walks Anna, dressed to kill.
Anna: Hi.
Duke: Hi, Anna.
Anna: (walks to Duke) Hope I’m not too early.
Duke: (taking her hands) You look wonderful.
Anna: Thank you. (they kiss) Hi Angel.
Angel: Chief Devane.
Duke: I have dinner waiting upstairs, shall we go?
He takes out his keys and leads her to the elevator.
Anna: Of course, I feel slightly overdressed.  I thought it was a special
occasion.
Duke: Well, you were right. (Elevator door opens and they enter) This is a
very special occasion.
Anna: (as the door closes) What is it then?  Are we celebrating something?
Duke: Yeah, we’re celebrating our love-- how much I adore you. (kisses her)
Anna: Oh, I love you too.  It should be illegal to be this happy. (Duke kisses
her forehead)
Duke: Are you really happy?
Anna: Deliriously so.  It’s the beginning of our life together, you know. (Duke
kisses her) A wonderful life, it will be wonderful forever.
Duke: (They hug with Anna head on Duke’s shoulder) Yes, it’s forever,
forever.

Fade to black.

Duke’s Penthouse
Duke: (pouring liquor into glasses and turns to hand one to Anna) More
coffee?
Anna: No thank you, dinner was delicious.
Duke: I’ll tell the chef.
He walks Anna by the hand to the living room couch.
Anna: Beautiful. (they sit and clink glasses) To us.
Duke: To us (they take a sip, Duke looking into her eyes and then leans
over and kisses her neck)
Anna: (seriously)You’re so quiet this evening.
Duke: Am I?
Anna: Yes, what are you thinking?
Duke: The same thing I’ve been thinking for weeks.  How much I love you.  Do
you believe me?
Anna: (nodding) I do.  Sometimes I think it isn’t real at all.
Duke: Oh, there is only one reality.  (kisses passionately) I want you to believe
something else.
Anna: What?
Duke: I’ve taken steps to protect Frisco and Felicia.  They’ll be coming home
soon, safe and sound.
Anna: How do you know?  What kind of steps?
Duke: I can’t tell you that, but you must believe me.
Anna: I believe you, if you say it’s so.
Duke gets up walks over to the window
Anna: Is something bothering you? What is it?
Duke: Nothing.
He puts his hands into his pockets.
Anna: Come on.
She gets up and walks over to him putting her hands on his back.
Anna: You can tell me anything you know?  Are you in some kind of trouble?
Duke: Trouble… (as he turns to face her) I’ve been into trouble since, since I
was a kid.  Since I was breaking my back trying to put food on the table, I’ve
been in trouble. (Anna touches his face) No, (walking away) I can’t blame
poverty, no matter which way you look at it.  I’ve gone into everything with
my eyes wide open.  There’s no choice, the only thing I can blame is my
ambition.
Anna:  What do you mean, you have to blame?  Why, what have you done?
Duke: (turning to look at her) Too many things I’m ashamed of.
Anna: Well, I’ve done things I’m ashamed of.
Duke: No, not you, you’re an angel.  You’ve always been an angel.
He touches her waist.
Anna: No, that’s not true.  I wish it were, but if we’re going to be together,
there are things that should know.
Duke: You can tell me anything, it wouldn’t change the way I feel.  It won’t
change my mind.  I love you, and I’ll always love you.
Anna: Oh, I love you too.
She embraces him.
Duke: Aigh, it’s so important, no matter what happens, no matter what
changes, no matter where I go.
Anna: (surprised) What do you mean? What?  You sound as if you’re saying
goodbye.
Duke kisses her with passion and hunger as he leads her to the bedroom.

Fade to black.

Anna and Duke are lying in his bed.
Anna: Ah, I can’t believe this.
Duke: What?
Anna: Well, you the first man I’ve been with since I was married to Robert and
I never thought I’d feel this way again.
Duke: (with a little smile) It was meant to be.
Anna: Yeah, I believe that.
Duke: My only regret is that we wasted so much time fighting this.
Anna: Well, that’s my fault really.  Do you know, do you understand why I
was so angry when you called Robin love?
Duke: Why?
Anna: Because that’s what she used to call me.  All those years I, I couldn’t
tell her I was her mother.  She used to think that I was her best friend called
love.
Duke: Robert called you that.
Anna: Yeah.
Duke: Why couldn’t you… why couldn’t you tell Robin you were her mother?
Anna: I was afraid for her.  I’ve done some things in the past… you know I’m
really ashamed of.
Duke: So have I.
Anna: (looking away) Not these things.  When I was in the WSB (Duke takes
her hand) I was a… I was a double agent at the time and then when I wanted
to try and get out it was too late.  And the DVX told me that they would kill
Robert unless I cooperated.
Duke: What did you do?
Anna: I played their game, of course.  A man, that Robert and I were both
very fond of, was killed because of me and I never got over that and Robert
never really forgave me.  But he didn’t turn me in.
Duke: Did you tell him you were trying to save his life?
Anna: Ah, no he really didn’t give me a chance. Well, it wasn’t until years later
when he knew Robin was his child that I could tell him.
Duke: It must have hurt you very deeply.
Anna: Yes.  I always thought that Robert would come back to me, but then he
found someone else, fell in love, got married.
Duke sits up and turns to her, straddles her with of his both arms, as she
touches one of his.
Duke: Are you over him?
Anna: How could you ask such a thing, now?
Duke: Because I’m a very jealous man where you’re concerned.  I love you, I
love you very much.  You’re my woman.  I don’t want to see any other man
with you.  You promise me you won’t ever be with another man, ever.
Anna: I promise.
Duke: Promise… (smiling) so this will be for the rest of our lives.
Looking deep into each others eyes, they begin to kiss passionately.

Fade out.

Fade in to Anna asleep in Duke’s arms.  Duke plays with her hair and kisses
her head.  She awakens.
Anna: (Rubbing her eyes) I dozed off.
Duke: I love watching you sleep.
Anna: (laughing and looking up at him) Why do you look so sad? (touching
his chin with her finger) Because we were talking about the past, um.
Duke: No, I’m not sad (smiling).
Anna: (smiling) I had a great dream. You were there and Robin was there.
Oh, Frisco and Felicia were there too.  Everyone was so happy.  It was great.
Duke: I hope you never have anything but, but good dreams.
Anna: (she looks at him) What do you dream?
Duke: I’ve only had one dream since the day that I met you.
Anna: What?
Duke: To spend the rest of my life with you.
Anna: Well, I’m going to make that come true.
She kisses his chest.
Duke: You already have.  No matter what happens, I love you more than I
love life itself.
Anna: Duke, I…
He kisses her and she responds.

Fade Out

Anna is lying in Duke’s arms as he stares at the ceiling.
Anna: This is the most wonderful place in the whole world.
Duke: Isn’t very restful though, is it?
Anna: (laughing) I can sleep at other times, I don’t want to waste one
precious moment with you. (moving her fingers on his chest)
Duke: I feel the way you do, live every moment as if it’s your last.
Anna:  Oh, absolutely.  We have the rest of the night, not to mention the rest
of our lives.  Actually, maybe we don’t have the rest of the night.  I probably
should be getting home.  What time is it?
Duke: I don’t know.
He lifts himself slightly and looks over at the clock.
Duke: It's about two.
Anna: I don’t want to go (as she positions herself back in Duke’s arms) I feel
so safe here.
Duke: Don’t you worry.  I won’t let anyone hurt you. (Anna shivers) What’s
the matter?  Are you cold?
Anna: No, I’m afraid.
Duke: Afraid? I’ll always protect you.
Anna: It’s not me, it’s Frisco and Felicia.  I wonder where they’re spending the
night.  I wonder if they’re safe.

Fade Out

Fade in as Duke and Anna are walking along the docks, arms around each
other.
Anna: You don’t have to walk me home, you know.
Duke: I want to.
Anna: I can take care of myself.
Duke: I don’t deny it.
Anna: It’s a really sad thing if the chief of police is afraid to walk home at night.
She stands in front of him, and they hold each other’s hands.
Duke: Well, if you don’t tell anyone then I won’t.
Anna: (she touches his cheek) You’re so sweet to worry.
She goes to walk on and Duke grabs her hand to bring her back.
Duke: I’m not worried.  I just want to spend these last moments with you
that's all.
Anna: Last moments? (quizzical look)
Duke: Until I see you again.
Anna: We’re going to see each other in the morning.  Sounds like it’s going to
be several weeks.
Duke: Now is it a crime for me to want to spend every minute with you?
Anna: No, it's very flattering and I love it.
Duke: Have I told you how much I care for you recently?
Anna: Yeah, several times (they are looking so deeply into each other’s eyes)
tell me again.
Duke: Oh, you’re the most important thing in my life (as he pulls her into his
arms) the most important.
Anna: (she leans back so she can look at him and she is smiling) I intend to
hold you to that.  Does it bother you?
Duke: No, no it doesn’t bother me.  I was just thinking how happy I am that I
found you, that’s all.
Anna: Well, I’m going to be around for a very, very long time.  I um, hate to
put a damper on things but to you think we could talk shop for awhile?
Duke: Yeah.
Duke folds his arms.
Anna: You said that you needed a little more time, before you can find that
information I need for Frisco and Felicia.  Do you have it yet?
Duke: Yes.
Anna: Can I have it?
Duke: Later today.
Anna:  (she puts her chin on his shoulder) Is that just a stalling tactic?
Duke: No, no I promise you, you’ll have all the answers you need, later today.
Anna: That’s good enough for me.  You don’t know how relieved I am to hear
you say that, you know.
Duke: I just, I wish it hadn’t taken so long.  I (as he turns and looks at her,
taking her in his arms) God, I wish for so many things.
Anna: I know you mean that.
Duke: I mean it.  It will all be over shortly Anna.
Anna: (As she leans back to look at him) For the first time in weeks you know,
I really feel like we’re going to sort out this whole mess, get it cleared up.
Duke: (nodding slightly) You’ll have all your answers, be patient.
Anna: Then you owe me a vacation (smiling).  Remember our romantic
getaway?
Duke: (Staring deeply into her eyes as he puts both hands on her cheeks) In
a small hotel.
Anna: Yes, with a private garden, maybe this vacation will have more meaning
for us, perhaps.
Duke: Perhaps.
Anna: After what you said last night, I mean, I wonder whether this hotel has
a (pause) bridal suite.
Duke: (Just staring at her not really hearing what she is saying) What?  I’m
sorry, I, I drifted off, I’m sorry. (Anna lowers her head into his chest and
starts laughing) What were you saying?
Anna: You chose a fine time to stop listening to me. (embarrassed) I accepted
your marriage proposal. (Duke pulls her into a passionate kiss and Anna
responds but then pulls her lips way, then kisses him quick again) Duke, I love
your spontaneity, but there is plenty of time for all this in the future.
Duke: In the future, yeah. (Hugs her)
Anna: As in happily ever after.
Duke:  The future means so many different things to so many people.  For
some people it’s a couple of hours.
Anna: It's years for us right?  Years and years (as she looks at him).
Duke: I’ll always love you, Anna.
Anna: Are you trying to tell me something?
Duke: Yes, I love you, I love you and I’ll love you forever (kisses her) I’ll love
you forever (as he hugs her close).
